Getting started

What is PlugCam?

PlugCam is a video app for your vehicle's cameras, for vehicles with Google built-in. It shows every camera's clips by drive and day on the vehicle's screen when you're parked, puts your speed and power alongside them, and backs them up to PlugLog's cloud on its own. You can watch them on your phone and at plugcam.app too.

How do I install PlugCam in my vehicle?

Open the Play Store on your vehicle's screen, find PlugCam and install it. On your phone, get PlugCam for Android from Google Play. The Apps page at plugcam.app, once you're signed in, has the links.

How does PlugCam find my clips?

The first time, PlugCam asks you to choose the folder your vehicle's cameras record to, with Android's folder picker. On GM vehicles that's Android › media › com.gm.ultifi.gmconnectedcameraservice › Recordings on the camera drive. PlugCam only reads that folder. You can change it any time in Backup › Camera folder.

How do I sign in?

PlugCam signs in on its own: scan the QR code on the vehicle's screen with your phone, or get an email, and approve it at plugcam.app. It's a PlugLog account, so if the PlugLog car app is already signed in on the same vehicle, PlugCam can use that instead.

Do I need a PlugLog account or the PlugLog app?

PlugCam uses a PlugLog account, the same one at pluglog.app. If you don't have one, signing in to PlugCam makes it for you. You don't need the PlugLog app.

Why does PlugCam ask which vehicle this is?

Your clips back up to the vehicle you choose in your PlugLog garage. Pick one you already have, or add any vehicle, electric or gas, from PlugLog's list. Nothing goes up until you choose. Once backups start, the choice is locked so your clips stay with the right vehicle. Signed in through the PlugLog car app, the vehicle is the one set there.

What does PlugCam cost?

PlugCam is free to install. Backing up to the cloud takes PlugCam storage: $39 a year per 50 GB, shared by all your vehicles, up to 1 TB. It's sold on its own, with no PlugLog Pro needed, at plugcam.app/upgrade or pluglog.app/upgrade. New accounts get 50 GB free for 30 days to try it.

What can I do without PlugCam storage?

Watch every clip on your vehicle's screen, keep and tag them, and watch and save clips on your phone straight from the vehicle when they're on the same Wi-Fi or your phone's hotspot. Storage adds backup to the cloud, backing up from your phone, and watching from anywhere.

Can I try new features early?

Yes. PlugCam has betas on Google Play for the vehicle, Android phones, Wear OS watches and Android TV. Email support@plugcam.app with the Google account you use on Google Play and we'll add you, then join from the Apps page at plugcam.app. Betas are early builds and can be buggier, so if your vehicle's video matters to you, stay on the live app.

In the vehicle

What happens while I'm driving?

What's on each tab?

Home has your latest drive up top and your newest clips. Drives has every drive by day. Kept has what you've kept and shared: incidents, saved moments, clips you made and kept events. Backup has what's uploading and PlugCam's settings.

Link to this answer
Can I see every camera of the same moment?

Yes. Switch between Front, Rear, Left and Right while a clip plays and you stay on the same moment. Filter Home by camera, or show only what you've kept.

Link to this answer
What's the graph under my clips?

Your speed, and an EV's battery power (or speeding up and slowing down, on a gas vehicle), in step with the video. PlugCam records them once a second while the vehicle is on. It needs the vehicle's speed and energy permissions.

What does Keep do?

In the vehicle, open an event or a drive and tap Back up: it backs up from every camera and is kept. Kept clips are never deleted to make room. Stop keeping an event and it stays backed up, but it can be deleted to make room for new drives.

Link to this answer
Can I label my clips?

Yes. Tag an event or a drive with a name of your own, like Home or Job site, up to 40 characters. Your earlier tags show as chips so you can pick one again.

How do I save a moment while I'm driving?

Tap Save moment on PlugCam's notification. It saves 30 seconds before to 10 seconds after your tap, from every camera. Tap again inside the moment to make it longer, up to 3 minutes. It works without a connection, is kept and tagged Saved moment, and backs up first. Find it under Kept › Saved moments.

What happens if I brake hard?

PlugCam spots a hard stop from 15 mph or more and keeps 30 seconds before and after it from every camera, then backs those clips up first. A card on the vehicle's screen says what it saved. Tap OK, or Not an incident if it wasn't one. PlugCam on your Android phone lets you know too.

Link to this answer
Can I cut a short clip?

Yes. Make a clip from any clip, 5 seconds to 1 minute long, from all 4 cameras or just one. In the vehicle it works while parked. You can also make clips at plugcam.app and in the phone app. Clips you make are kept for good and count toward your storage.

Why do my drives have town names?

With Location on, PlugCam names your drives and clips by town, like Fort Wayne, IN, using your vehicle's own place lookup, and keeps the names on the vehicle. Turn Location off in Backup and you see times only.

The phone apps (iPhone and Android)

What does the PlugCam phone app do?

It puts your vehicle's clips and your backed-up clips in one list, each with its status: On vehicle, Waiting, Uploading, Backed up or Kept. Watch them, save them to your phone, keep and tag them, back them up, and see a Snapshot of each camera. It has the same tabs as the vehicle: Home, Drives, Kept and Backup.

Link to this answer
Is PlugCam on iPhone the same as on Android?

Yes, the two apps are built from the same code and work the same way. Sign in on either with the account your vehicle's PlugCam uses.

Link to this answer
How do I sign in on my phone?

Enter your email and we'll send you a sign-in link. Open it and approve it if it shows the same code as your phone. There's no password. After you sign in, PlugCam asks you to read and accept its terms.

Link to this answer
Can I watch clips straight from my vehicle?

Yes, for free. When your phone and vehicle share Wi-Fi, or your vehicle is on your phone's hotspot, PlugCam plays and saves clips straight from it, with no upload. Only phones signed in to your account can see them.

Link to this answer
Can I watch my vehicle's clips when I'm away from it?

With PlugCam storage, yes: PlugCam reaches your vehicle over the internet. If the vehicle is on its own data, PlugCam tells you about how much data a clip will use and asks first. On its Wi-Fi or your hotspot, watching is free.

Link to this answer
What is Snapshot?

A still from each camera, a few seconds old, on the phone's Home. It refreshes every 30 seconds while PlugCam is open. You see it when your phone is on the same Wi-Fi as your vehicle, or the vehicle is on your hotspot.

Link to this answer
Where does Save to phone put my clips?

On Android, in Movies › PlugCam. On iPhone, in Photos (PlugCam asks to add to Photos, and can't see what's already there). It saves the camera you're watching.

Link to this answer
Can I back up a clip from my phone?

Yes, with PlugCam storage. Tap Back up and your vehicle uploads every camera of it. If the vehicle is on vehicle data or a phone's hotspot, PlugCam asks first: back up now with vehicle data, or wait for Wi-Fi. If the vehicle is off, it backs up when the vehicle is on again.

Link to this answer
Why does PlugCam on iPhone ask for Local Network access?

To find your vehicle on the same Wi-Fi or your hotspot, so it can play and save clips straight from it.

Link to this answer
Why does it say Vehicle not connected?

Your vehicle hasn't checked in for a few minutes, usually because it's off or out of signal. PlugCam shows when and where it was last seen. Clips on the vehicle open once it's on again, and your backed-up clips still play.

Link to this answer
Does PlugCam work on my watch?

PlugCam for Wear OS, in beta, tells you about a hard stop on your wrist and lets you answer it: confirm it, or say it's not an incident. It works through PlugCam on your Android phone.

Link to this answer
Is there a PlugCam app for TV?

Yes, PlugCam for Android TV is in beta. Signed out, you can watch the PlugCam Community, moments other people chose to share, and react to them. Sign in to watch your own drives and kept clips: scan the code on the TV, or go to plugcam.app/tv and enter it. You can't make an account on the TV.

Backup and storage

How do I turn on backup?

Backup is off until you turn it on. In PlugCam's Backup page in your vehicle, turn on Over Wi-Fi. Your clips then upload on their own over your home and other saved networks.

Link to this answer
Which cameras does it back up?

Front and Rear back up automatically to start. Add Left and Right in Backup, or back up any one clip from its page whenever you want. Tap Back up on a clip and every camera of it backs up and is kept for good.

Link to this answer
How much data does backup use?

About 5 GB for each hour of driving with all four cameras backed up, and about half that for Front and Rear alone. Over Wi-Fi it doesn't touch the vehicle's data plan. Over the vehicle's data only if you turn that on.

Link to this answer
What happens when my storage is full?

Clips you back up yourself are kept for good: Kept clips are never deleted to make room. The rest can be overwritten, oldest first, when a new clip needs the space, like your vehicle's own loop recording. Without storage (after the trial, say), what's backed up stays to watch and new clips stop backing up.

Link to this answer
Will you tell me when kept clips fill my storage?

Yes. We email you when kept clips use most of your storage, and again when it's full of them. New clips can't back up until there's room, so stop keeping some, delete some or add storage.

Link to this answer
What if the connection drops during an upload?

The upload picks up where it stopped, not from the start.

Link to this answer
Where do I buy storage?

On the web, at plugcam.app/upgrade or pluglog.app/upgrade, not in the apps. Payments go through Stripe. Storage is shared by all your vehicles and renews each year.

Link to this answer
Where can I watch my clips?

On the vehicle's screen when you're parked, and anywhere on the web: at plugcam.app, signed in with your account, and on pluglog.app's Videos page. Every camera, with your drive's speed and power alongside.

Link to this answer
How do I delete backed-up clips?

Open the event or drive at plugcam.app or in the phone app and delete it. It can't be undone. A kept event can't be deleted until you stop keeping it. Deleting from the cloud never deletes anything from your vehicle.

Link to this answer
Does it back up my drives too?

Only if you want it to. With the Drives switch on, each drive's route and speed, and an EV's battery power, go to your account, so they show alongside the video. Leave it off and only the clips back up.

Link to this answer

Sharing

How do I share a clip?

Back it up, then tap Share link on the event. PlugCam asks first and shares nothing until you tap Share. Anyone with the link can watch that moment, every camera of it, and it's on your public profile. Nothing before or after it is shared.

Link to this answer
What do people see when I share?

The video, and only your first name and vehicle. No location or map. Anything the cameras saw is in it, so watch it first.

Link to this answer
What is the PlugCam Community on Android TV?

Shared events with Also show it on Android TV on are in the Community, where anyone can watch and react without signing in. There are reactions only, no comments. Turn the switch off for any shared event and it stays on your profile.

Link to this answer
How do I stop sharing something?

Open it and stop sharing. Its link stops working, and it leaves your profile and Android TV. Everything you've shared is listed under Kept › Shared at plugcam.app.

Link to this answer
Can I send an incident to my insurance company?

Yes. Share an incident from the phone app or plugcam.app and choose what goes in: all 4 cameras in sync, speed and braking, and map, time and place. Pick how long the link works (24 hours, 7 days or 30 days), and add a 6-digit code if you like. Whoever opens it can watch, download everything and get a PDF report. Turn the link off any time.

Privacy

Who can see my clips?

Only you. Your clips are kept in your vehicle and in PlugLog's cloud, under your account, and nothing is shared unless you share it. We never sell your data or your videos.

Link to this answer
Does PlugCam send my location?

A clip's speed and power never include your position. Town names are looked up on the vehicle. Your route only leaves the vehicle if you turn on drive backup. Turn off Location in PlugCam's Backup page to stop recording positions at all.

Link to this answer
Does PlugCam change or delete anything on my camera drive?

No. PlugCam only reads the folder you choose. It never deletes or changes anything in it. Your vehicle records over its own oldest clips as the drive fills, as it always does.

Link to this answer
How do I sign out?

In the vehicle, in Backup. On the web, on your account page at plugcam.app. On the phone, in the app's Backup tab.

Link to this answer
How do I delete my account?

In your account's Settings › Data at pluglog.app. Everything in it is deleted right away, including your clips and drives, and it can't be recovered. Remove PlugCam from your vehicle to delete what it kept there.

Link to this answer
Can I cut off a phone that watched straight from my vehicle?

Yes. Sign it out of PlugCam, then in your vehicle go to PlugCam › Backup › Forget phones. That stops every phone's old connection. Phones still signed in to your account pick up the new one on their own.

Troubleshooting

PlugCam shows no clips. What do I do?

Make sure the camera drive is plugged in: its clips show up once the vehicle can read it. Then check PlugCam is reading the right folder in Backup › Camera folder.

Link to this answer
Why does it say a clip isn't here anymore?

Your vehicle records over its oldest clips as its drive fills. Back up or keep the moments that matter so they stay.

Link to this answer
My clips aren't backing up. Why?

Check that Over Wi-Fi is on in PlugCam's Backup page, that the vehicle is on and online, and that you have PlugCam storage. The Backup page in the vehicle and at plugcam.app shows what's waiting and why. If more cameras record than your Wi-Fi can upload, backup falls behind, and PlugCam tells you.

Link to this answer
My phone says to update PlugLog or turn on backup in my vehicle.

To back up from your phone, PlugCam in your vehicle needs backup on (Backup › Over Wi-Fi). If the PlugLog car app runs backup on your vehicle, update it to 0.9.46 or later.
